8 Weeks of Budget Meal Plans

8 Weeks of Budget Meal Plans

Most people do not overspend on groceries because dinner is expensive. They overspend because at 5:30 on a Wednesday there is no plan, so they buy what looks good, then order takeout anyway.

A meal plan fixes that, but only if the shopping list is already done. So I wrote eight weeks of plans with the list built in.

What is inside

A 52 page printable PDF. Eight weeks, each with five dinners, Monday through Friday, and a consolidated shopping list grouped by store section: pasta and grains, meat and eggs, dairy, produce, canned goods, frozen and bakery. Every line has an estimated price at 2025 US grocery prices, and every week has a total. The most expensive week comes to $46.80 and the cheapest to $30.30. All eight stay under $60.

You also get all 40 recipes, each on its own page with total cost, cost per serving, a price on every ingredient, a numbered method and a tip.

One honest note: the weekly totals assume you already own eleven pantry staples such as oil, salt, sugar, flour and basic spices. If you start from an empty kitchen, buying them once costs about $24.

Three weeks from the book

  • Week 1, Pasta and Beans Week: $32.90. Monday cooks a full box of spaghetti and Thursday turns the leftover half into a frittata for $0.66 a serving.
  • Week 6, Eggs and Potatoes Week: $30.30. A baked potato night, a veggie omelet dinner and an egg drop rice soup share two cartons of eggs and one bag of potatoes.
  • Week 4, One-Skillet Week: $41.55. Taco skillet, chicken thighs with potatoes, sausage pasta, black bean chilaquiles and a cabbage stir-fry.

How the weeks are built

Each week uses a handful of ingredients across five dinners on purpose. A block of cheddar shows up three nights, a bag of rice four, a can of tomatoes twice. That overlap is how the shopping list stays short and the total stays low.

Recipe pages show the cost of the portion each dinner uses, so a recipe may seem cheaper than its share of the list. That is normal: you buy a whole package and use it across the week. Anything left is meant to be frozen or used in another dinner.

How I use it

On Saturday I print the week, cross off what I own, and shop once. The week's page goes on the fridge. When someone asks what is for dinner, it is written there.

You do not have to cook in order. Swap Tuesday and Thursday if that fits your schedule, or repeat a week you liked and change two dinners.

All prices are estimates, so scan the list against your store's flyer before you go. Swapping one item for what is on sale rarely changes the dinner and often changes the total.
