The Pantry Staples Cookbook

The Pantry Staples Cookbook

There is a version of grocery shopping where you walk in without a list, buy twelve things, and still have nothing for dinner. The fix is not a bigger budget. It is a shelf that always has dinner on it.

That is what this cookbook is for. It starts with a list of 30 pantry staples, priced line by line at 2025 US grocery prices (estimated), and then gives you 50 dinners you can cook mostly from it.

What is inside

A 55 page printable PDF. The pantry list comes first: rice, pasta, lentils, oats, flour, canned beans, tomatoes, tomato paste, peanut butter, tuna, bouillon, oil, soy sauce, vinegar, sugar and the spices that matter. Stocking the entire list from scratch is about $52, and I show you which dozen items to buy first if you want to start under $25.

Then 50 recipes. Each has the total cost, cost per serving, a price on every ingredient line, a numbered method and a tip. Every dinner costs $1.12 a serving or less (estimated), and the median is about 73 cents.

Most recipes add a few cheap fresh or frozen extras: onions, garlic, potatoes, eggs, frozen peas, shredded cheese, cabbage. Those are what you buy each week; the shelf stays stocked.

Three dinners from the book

  • Tomato Paste Pasta: $0.52 a serving. Cook the paste in oil until it darkens, loosen it with pasta water, and you have a sauce from a 6 oz can.
  • Pantry Black Bean Soup: $0.91 a serving. Canned beans, tomatoes, an onion and three spices, with a splash of vinegar at the end.
  • Potato Pancakes: $0.73 a serving. Potatoes, onion, eggs and flour; squeeze the water out and fry until crisp.

How a pantry saves money

When the shelf is stocked, a dinner never costs more than the extras. You stop buying the $9 emergency dinner because you have the ingredients for a $3 one. And because staples are cheapest in the big package, the per-serving price keeps dropping.

The book also has restock rules: replace an item when you open the last one, buy two when it drops below the usual price, and keep a running list on the fridge. Rice, pasta, oats, flour and dried lentils keep for a year or more in sealed containers.
